You briefly discuss the study with the patient. You remind him that varenicline is currently indicated by the Food and Drug Administration for "smoking cessation assistance". You discuss that the most common side effect of the medication is nausea, which can be reduced by taking varenicline with a full meal, drinking a glass of water after taking varenicline, and perhaps (anecdotally) eating a banana. He decides to try the medication and you both decide on a quit date 8 days after he starts.
