She also cautioned against gainsharing, the concept of hospitals and physicians entering into agreements that award the latter for delivering quality, cost-effective care. “I’m not so sure about this,” she said “It’s not something that’s about quality; it’s about saving the hospital money. It’s not a sustainable business idea. If you want gainsharing money, you should do it on a short-term basis.”
Physicians can benefit from the right collaboration with a hospital, she said. “The things that unite you with the hospital are more than the things that divide you,” Ms. Gosfield noted. “You will do better holding hands crossing the dangerous street of health care in the future with the hospital, but you need to maintain your own identity.”
