“[Surgery] certainly isn’t always helpful and isn’t the answer for survival in every case, but clearly can be in some,” concluded Dr. Gress. “There are many challenges to these large infarcts in the ICU that relate to ventilation, intracranial pressure control, watching for neurologic deterioration, and the timing of surgical backup when needed. There are many opportunities to improve outcome if we just are attentive to these issues.”
