HIPAA: The good, the bad, and the ugly

In many ways, HIPAA’s security, privacy, and electronic-standardization provisions are paving the way for more widespread use of Internet applications in medicine. HIPAA may prove to be a nascent attempt to develop a nationwide system in which a single electronic medical record exists for every American patient—a revolution that would transform, and benefit, the practice of medicine.
