Thyroid function and diabetes: Exploring the link

Higher TSH levels are associated with a 13% increased likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes, which rises to 40% in individuals with prediabetes, according to the findings of a population-based study conducted in the Netherlands involving almost 8500 adults. “These findings suggest we should consider screening people with prediabetes for low thyroid function,” said Dr. Layal Chaker of Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, at the April Endocrine Society Meeting in Boston, Mass.
