ABSTRACTNew advances in Papanicolaou test technology, human papillomavirus DNA testing, and revisions in the Bethesda terminology for cervical cytology have transformed the management of abnormal Pap tests. This approach has been validated by a recent randomized clinical trial, and in some instances can reduce the number of colposcopies by 50%.
