ABSTRACTIn patients with morbid obesity, surgery is the only treatment known to produce sustained weight loss and to reduce comorbidities. Traditional (open) gastric bypass surgery is associated with postoperative complications that include wound infection, pulmonary embolism, and pneumonia. Laparoscopic techniques achieve similar long-term results as does open surgery, with fewer postoperative complications.
