ABSTRACTPatients with prosthetic heart valves require regular examinations and echocardiograms, antithrombotic therapy, and appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis against endocarditis. Physicians must also be on the alert for several uncommon but potentially devastating complications: valve structural failure, thrombosis, embolism, endocarditis, paravalvular leak, and hemolytic anemia.
