ABSTRACTIn addition to being associated with combat, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) also occurs in civilians exposed to severe trauma or serious illness. Manifestations of PTSD are varied and commonly include nonspecific physical symptoms, sleep disturbances, and psychological problems. Treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) is usually effective.
