Efficacy of Oseltamivir in Children Evaluated

Clin Infect Dis; ePub 2017 Nov 23; Malosh, et al

Treatment with oseltamivir significantly reduced the duration of illness in those with influenza and lowered the risk of developing otitis media, a recent study found. The systematic review and meta-analysis identified randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of oseltamivir therapy in children. 5 trials were identified and included 2,561 patients in the intent to treat (ITT) and 1,598 patients in the intent to treat infected (ITTI) population. Researchers found:

  • Overall, oseltamivir treatment significantly reduced the duration of illness in the ITTI population (restricted mean survival time [RMST] difference ‒17.6 hours).
  • In trials enrolling patients without asthma, the difference was larger (‒29.9 hours).
  • Risk of otitis media was 34% lower in the ITTI population.
  • The only adverse event with a significantly higher risk in the treatment group was vomiting.
