In persons with or at higher risk for knee osteoarthritis (OA), age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and pain – but not objectively measured average daily minutes of sedentary or moderate‐vigorous activity – were associated with subsequent worsening of Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grade, a recent study found. In Osteoarthritis Initiative participants with or at higher risk for knee OA enrolled in an accelerometer sub-study at 48m (study baseline), physical activity was measured by uniaxial accelerometer (ActiGraph GT1M). Radiographic progression was defined as any 48m‐96m KL grade worsening. Researchers found:
- 1,206 persons [mean age 64 years (SD 9), 631 (52%) women, BMI 28 (5), average daily sedentary activity 602 minutes (86), light activity 284 minutes (75), moderate‐vigorous activity 20 minutes (20)] contributed 1,978 knees; 267 (14%) had KL worsening.
- In the multivariable model, age, sex, BMI, and pain, but neither sedentary activity (adjusted OR 0.99) nor moderate‐vigorous activity (adjusted OR 1.00) were associated with KL worsening.
