Key clinical point: In older men, circulating levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) independently predict risk of hip fracture.
Major finding: Each standard deviation increase in DHT (0.23 ng/ml) correlated with a 26% decreased risk of hip fracture (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.74; 95% confidence interval, 0.55-1.00; P = .049).
Study details: A prospective cohort study involving 1,128 men 65 years and older who were free of cardiovascular disease.
