Antimalarial Exposure Above Recommended Doses in Lupus Contributes Most to Retinopathy Risk

Key clinical point: Retinopathy screening is important for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who are taking chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine.

Major finding: A total of 18 out of 326 patients (5.5%) had confirmed retinal toxicity after a minimum of 8 years of exposure to hydroxychloroquine and/or chloroquine.

Study details: Case-control study of 18 SLE patients with retinal complications and 54 matched control subjects with SLE but without retinal complications.
