Addressing Health-Risk Behaviors in Mentally Ill

Which interventions have the strongest evidence?

4 interventions were found to have strong evidence of effectiveness in addressing key medical conditions and health-risk behaviors in those with severe mental illness, according to a comprehensive review of 108 studies.

Investigators selected randomized controlled trials and observational studies testing a number of interventions among individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Of the 108 studies selected, 80 addressed overweight/obesity. They ranked the quality of the evidence and intervention effectiveness.

Evidence was ranked high for:

• Metformin and behavioral intervention effects on weight loss.

• Bupropion and varenicline intervention effects on reduced tobacco smoking.

Evidence was ranked low for most other interventions.
