Perceived Stress and Memory Decline

Amnestic mild cognitive impairment risk seen

High levels of perceived stress were linked with higher risk of amnestic mild cognitive impairment in a trial involving 507 participants in the Einstein Aging Study. Investigators administered the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) annually to participants who were free of amnestic mild cognitive impairment and dementia at baseline and had at least 1 follow-up.

71 developed amnestic mild cognitive impairment. Greater levels of perceived stress translated into a 30% higher risk of amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

The authors noted consistent results even after covariate adjustment. They also pointed out that longitudinal analyses showed no evidence of reverse causation.
