Outcomes After Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy

Obstet Gynecol; ePub 2018 Feb 5; Rottenstreich, et al

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is associated with reduced rates of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), excessive fetal growth, and cesarean delivery and an increased rate of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) and low-birth-weight neonates. This according to a retrospective case-control study of deliveries from 2006 to 2016 at 2 university hospitals. Among the details:

  • Data from 238 women were analyzed, 119 post-laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and 119 matched control participants.
  • The median preoperative body mass index (BMI) was 41.7 and the median postoperative BMI was 28.9 among the post-laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy patients.
  • Compared with the control group, the study group had lower rates of GDM (3.4% vs 17.6%), large-for-gestational-age neonates (1.7% vs 19.3%), and birth weight >4,000 g (0.8% vs 7.6%), but higher proportions of SGA neonates (14.3% vs 4.2%) and low-birth-weight neonates (12.6% vs 4.2%).
  • Rates of gestational hypertensive disorders and prematurity were comparable between the groups.
