Robotic Surgery for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

Female Pelvic Med Reconstr Surg; ePub 2018 Jan 24; Chu, et al

While patients’ knowledge about robotic surgery for pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is low, the majority of women with POP have no preference for robotic approach to POP surgery. This according to a cross-sectional survey of new patients presenting with POP at 7 academic sites. Researchers found:

  • 176 women were included in the survey analysis.
  • Most participants had no surgical preference (66.3%), whereas 27.3% preferred nonrobotic and 6.4% preferred routes.
  • Women preferring robotic surgery were more likely to view it as faster than laparoscopic surgery.
  • Even among women who expressed preference, knowledge about robotic surgery was low.
