More than 1 in 3 premenopausal women undergoing benign hysterectomy also undergo oophorectomy without an appropriate indication documented, according to a recent study. A cross-sectional analysis was performed utilizing the California Office of Statewide Health Planning Development Patient Discharge Database for 2005 to 2011. Researchers found:
- 57,776 benign premenopausal hysterectomies with oophorectomies were identified during the study period.
- 37.5% of the premenopausal oophorectomies were deemed “inappropriate” with no documented reason for removal.
- Total number of premenopausal inpatient hysterectomies with oophorectomy decreased yearly during the study period.
- However, the percentage of inappropriate oophorectomies remained stable.
