Evaluating Inappropriate Premenopausal Oophorectomy

Menopause; ePub 2017 May 8; Mahal, Rhoads, et al

More than 1 in 3 premenopausal women undergoing benign hysterectomy also undergo oophorectomy without an appropriate indication documented, according to a recent study. A cross-sectional analysis was performed utilizing the California Office of Statewide Health Planning Development Patient Discharge Database for 2005 to 2011. Researchers found:

  • 57,776 benign premenopausal hysterectomies with oophorectomies were identified during the study period.
  • 37.5% of the premenopausal oophorectomies were deemed “inappropriate” with no documented reason for removal.
  • Total number of premenopausal inpatient hysterectomies with oophorectomy decreased yearly during the study period.
  • However, the percentage of inappropriate oophorectomies remained stable.
