Six years after surgery for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse (POP), estimated recurrence rates may be as high as 40% to 60% for uterosacral ligament colpopexy, laparoscopic, and robotic sacral colpopexy, a recent study found. The retrospective study included 1,381 women who underwent surgery between 2006 and 2012: 983 (71.1%) uterosacral, 256 (18.5%) laparoscopic, and 142 (11.2%) robotic colpopexies. Researchers found:
• Median months to failure using composite recurrence were: uterosacral, 17.1; laparoscopic, 10.1; and robotic, 9.7.
• By year 6, the estimated composite recurrence rates for the uterosacral colpopexy, robotic, and laproscopic sacral colpopexy groups were 43%, 49%, and 57%, respectively.
