Lidocaine-prilocaine cream tops lidocaine injections for vulvar biopsy pain

Key clinical point: Patients report less pain with the cream and a better overall experience.

Major finding: The median highest pain score in a randomized trial of 38 women undergoing vulvar biopsies was 25.7 mm lower, on a 100 mm visual analogue scale, when they received 5% lidocaine-prilocaine cream instead of a 1% lidocaine injection.

Study details: The findings are based on a randomized trial with 38 women aged 60 on average.

Disclosures: The work was funded by Duke University, Durham, N.C., and the National Institutes of Health. The study lead had no disclosures.
