Uterine balloon tamponade found safe in postpartum hemorrhage

Key clinical point: A review of the international evidence base for uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) found it an overall safe and efficacious procedure.

Major finding: Of 90 studies that reported efficacy data for UBT, the procedure had overall success of 85.9% in treating PPH.

Study details: Systematic review and meta-analysis of 91 studies involving 4,729 women who sustained PPH.

Disclosures: The senior author is a board member of the nonprofit organization Ujenzi Charitable Trust, which received Food and Drug Administration approval for the “Every Second Matters–Uterine Balloon Tamponade” device.
