Missed opportunities for human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization exist among young adult women, with the greatest frequency occurring during visits for either contraception or for STD screening. Racial disparity was also observed in this cross-sectional study, which assessed both the rates of and the factors associated with missed opportunities for HPV immunization among young adult women (aged 18 to 26 years) who attended an urban obstetrics and gynecology clinic. Researchers found:
- There were 1,670 vaccine-eligible visits by 1,241 under-immunized women, with a mean of 1.3 missed opportunities/person.
- 833 (67.1%) of the vaccine eligible women had at least 1 missed opportunity.
- The most common types of visits where a missed opportunity occurred were postpartum visits (17%) or visits for either sexually transmitted disease screening (21%) or for contraception (33%).
- Black women had higher adjusted odds of having a missed opportunity compared with white women (aOR=1.61).
