A 53-year-old man, a stockbroker, was admitted to the hospital because of bloody sputum. He had been well until 3 months ago, when coughing produced bloody sputum on awakening. Blood-streaked sputum was noted every 3 days for 2 months before admission. He had smoked 30 cigarettes a day for 25 years. His family history was noncontributory. On physical examination, rales were detected over the lung fields. On admission, findings on a conventional chest x-ray revealed a left hilar mass.
