In patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), seizures and pseudoperiodic discharges (PDs) are one mechanism for metabolic crisis, according to a study of 34 patients with TBI. Researchers found:
• 61% of patients with TBI experienced seizures or PDs.
• 42.9% of these seizures noted only on intracortal depth EEG and, in some cases, lasting many hours.
• Metabolic crisis, as measured by elevated cerebral microdialysis lactate/pyruvate ratio, occurred during seizures or PDs but not during electrically nonepileptic epochs.
