Hyperphosphorylated Tau Visible in TBI Survivors Decades After Brain Injury

Key clinical point: Brain imaging with tau tracers showed elevated tau deposits decades after a traumatic brain injury.

Major finding: Tau binding was more than 2,000 voxels above the threshold of detection in eight patients, and up to 1,999 voxels above threshold in seven.

Study details: The cohort study comprised 21 TBI patients and 11 controls.

Disclosures: The work was supported by the Medical Research Council and UK Dementia Research Institute. None of the authors declared having any competing interests related to the current study. Some authors reported financial ties to pharmaceutical companies.
