Clinical Edge

Summaries of Must-Read Clinical Literature, Guidelines, and FDA Actions

Guideline: Blood CO2 can be used to screen for OHS

Key clinical point: Testing serum bicarbonate, rather than arterial blood gas levels, can be used to rule out OHS in patients deemed at lower risk.

Major finding: Patients with serum bicarbonate of less than 27 mmol/L are unlikely to have OHS.

Study details: A clinical guideline derived from studies and trials identified in a systematic literature review through 2018.

Disclosures: The American Thoracic Society funded the guideline. Eight coauthors, including the lead author, disclosed financial conflicts of interest, while 13 reported none. Disclosures are available on the AJRCCM website.
