Cardiovascular Insights for Primary Care Physicians: An eNewsletter Series

In recent decades, advances in treatment and diagnostics have led to a decrease in age-adjusted cardiovascular mortality rates. However, cardiovascular disease (CVD) still remains the leading cause of death in the United States and worldwide. Like most chronic illnesses, the majority of CVD care occurs in a primary care setting. Thus, primary care physicians play an important role in the prevention, treatment, and management of CVD. Although numerous cardiovascular guidelines are available, the management of CVD is continually evolving, and deciding on an optimal treatment regimen for an individual patient can often be challenging. Thus, evidence suggests that many patients with CVD and related comorbidities remain undiagnosed and undertreated.

This series of eNewsletters summarizes key information and data on common cardiovascular issues facing primary care physicians today, including:

  • The use of dual antiplatelet therapy in high-risk patients with acute coronary syndrome
  • Statin therapy in chronic kidney disease
  • The benefits and risks of oral antiplatelet therapies
