USPSTF: Screening for Intimate Partner Violence

JAMA; 2018 Oct 23/30; US Preventive Services Task Force

Clinicians should screen women of reproductive age for intimate partner violence (IPV) and provide or refer those who screen positive to ongoing support services, according to a new recommendation statement from the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). The updated statement replaces the USPSTF 2013 recommendation on screening for IPV, elder abuse, and abuse of vulnerable adults. The recommendation applies to women of reproductive age and older or vulnerable adults without recognized signs and symptoms of abuse. The studies reviewed for IPV included adolescents to women in their 40s. The final recommendation statement states:

  • The USPSTF recommends that clinicians screen for IPV in women of reproductive age and provide or refer women who screen positive to ongoing support services. (B recommendation)
  • The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening for abuse and neglects in all older or vulnerable adults. (I statement)
