Zoster and Pneumococcal Vaccines Are Compatible

Am J Epidemiol; ePub 2018 Apr 11; Bruxvoort, et al

Despite the fact that the package inserts for live zoster vaccine and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine recommend they not be given together, a recent cohort study found no evidence to support that recommendation.

  • An observational study that included more than 30,000 patients in Southern California compared those who received zoster vaccine live concurrently with 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine with those who received the pneumococcal vaccine prior to the zoster vaccine.
  • There were no significant differences in the rates of herpes zoster between the groups (HR, 1.04).
