Although initial changes in Haemophilus influenzae colonization of children’s nasopharynxes may have suggested that pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) are having an impact among children with acute otitis media, over time those increases have not been sustained, according to 4 separate studies.
- Among children in cohort 1, who were recruited before routine use of PCV7, colonization with vaccine serotypes of H. influenzae was 26%.
- In cohort 2, 93% of whom received ≥2 doses of the vaccine, and cohort 3, all of whom received it, colonization reached 41% and 33% respectively.
- But cohort 4, all of whom received ≥2 or more doses of PCV13, colonization had dropped to 29%.
