Lifestyle Behavioral Risk Factors for T2D

Diabetes Care; ePub 2018 Mar 2; Siegel, et al

Only a small proportion of US adults engage in risk reduction behaviors for type 2 diabetes (T2D), a recent study found. The cross-sectional analysis examined the proportion of American adults without T2D that engage in lifestyle behaviors known to reduce T2D risk. It included 3,679 nonpregnant, nonlactating individuals aged ≥20 years without diabetes and who provided 2 days of reliable dietary data in the 2007-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Researchers found:

  • ∼21%, 29%, and 13% of individuals met fruit, vegetable, and dairy goals, respectively.
  • About half met the goal for total grains, compared with 18% for whole grains, and 54.2% met the meat/beans goals and 40.6% the oils goal.
  • About one-third met the physical activity goal, and 58.6% met the weight loss/maintenance goal.
  • Overall, only 3.1% met the majority of T2D risk reduction goals.
