Latest CDC Guidelines for Hepatitis B Prevention

MMWR Recomm Rep; 2018 Jan 12, Schillie, et al

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recently published its latest recommendations on preventing hepatitis B virus infection in the US. They include the following:

  • All pregnant women should be tested for hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg).
  • Any pregnant woman who tests positive for the antigen should have a follow-up test done to measure hepatitis B virus DNA.
  • Any infant who is born to a woman who is HBV infected should receive the HepB vaccine and hepatitis B immunoglobin within 12 hours of birth.
  • This series should be followed by completion of the vaccine series and post-vaccination serologic testing.
  • CDC also recommends universal hepatitis B vaccination within 24 hours of birth followed by the vaccine series.
