Severe Hypoglycemia, Poor Glycemic Control Fuel Fracture Risk in Older Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
Key clinical point: Older men and women with type 2 diabetes and poor glycemic control or episodes of severe hypoglycemia may be at higher risk for fractures.
Major finding: Patients faced a higher risk of fracture if they had two or more episodes of severe hypoglycemia (hazard ratio, 2.25; 95% confidence interval, 1.57-3.22) and one episode of severe hypoglycemia (HR, 1.57; 95% CI, 1.11-2.20).
Study details: A prospective analysis of fracture incidence in 2,755 men and 1,951 postmenopausal women in the Fukuoka Diabetes Registry between April 2008 and October 2010.
Disclosures: The study was funded in part by grants from The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science KAKENHI from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan; the Junior Scientist Development Grant supported by the Japan Diabetes Society; and the Lilly Research Grant Program for Bone & Mineral Research. The authors reported no relevant conflicts of interest.
