Statins in children cut long-term CVD risk in familial hypercholesterolemia
Key clinical point: Statins started in childhood for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia can reduce carotid thickening and cut the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Major finding: Follow-up LDL cholesterol levels at 20 years for those with familial hypercholesterolemia dropped 32% from baseline in the original study, compared with a 24% increase in the unaffected siblings.
Study details: A 20-year follow-up study of 184 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia and 77 unaffected siblings who had participated in a 2-year, placebo-controlled statin trial.
