GALACTIC: Early vasodilation strategy no help in acute heart failure

Key clinical point: Early, intensive, and sustained vasodilation did not improve mortality or 180-day readmission rates for patients in acute heart failure without severe pulmonary edema.

Major finding: The hazard ratio for the intervention arm of the open-label study was 1.07 (P = .59).

Study details: GALACTIC, a randomized, open-label, assessor-blinded, multinational trial of 781 patients with acute heart failure not requiring intensive care admission.

Disclosures: GALACTIC was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Foundation of Cardiology, University Hospital Basel (Switzerland), the Foundation for Cardiovascular Research Basel, and the Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation. Dr. Mueller reported no relevant conflicts of interest.
