Almost half of sudden cardiac deaths linked to prior silent MI

Key clinical point: Prior silent MIs were detected in nearly half of sudden cardiac deaths in persons with no CAD.

Major finding: In SCD autopsies, 42.4% of persons with no prior CAD diagnosis had myocardial scars indicating a silent MI.

Study details: A case-control study of nearly 6,000 SCDs in Northern Finland during 1998-2017.
