Low plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D 25(OH)D measured at the time of relative health was independently associated with increased risk of sepsis in a cohort of community-dwelling US adults. Participants were selected from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke study (REGARDS), a US cohort of 30,239 adults aged ≥45 years. Researchers measured baseline plasma 25(OH)D in 711 sepsis cases and in 992 participants randomly selected from the cohort. They found:
- Median age of participants in the study sample was 65 years (41% black, 45% male).
- Mean plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations was 25.8 ng/ml with 31% of individuals <20 ng/ml.
- The adjusted risk of community-acquired sepsis was higher for each lower category of baseline 25(OH)D.
- Results did not differ in analyses stratified by race or age.
