Study: Medicare may best Medicare Advantage at reducing readmissions

Key clinical point: Medicare Advantage may have worse hospital readmission rates than traditional Medicare.

Major finding: Medicare Advantage readmission rates across three quality areas worsened when using multiple data sets and making statistical adjustments.

Study details: A retrospective cohort study linking data from the Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set to the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review using hospital readmission data from 2011 to 2014.

Disclosures: The National Institute on Aging provided the primary funding for this study. A number of the authors received grants from the National Institutes of Health during the conduct of the study. No other relevant disclosures were reported.
