Sex Differences in HPV Prevalence in the US

J Infect Dis; ePub 2017 Dec 27; Lewis, et al

Among sexually experienced males and females in the US, any human papillomavirus (HPV) and high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) were significantly higher in males, with sex differences varying by age group and race/ethnicity. This according to a study that examined the prevalence of genital HPV among sexually experienced males and females aged 14 to 59 years in the US from 2013-2014. Self-collected penile and cervicovagnial swabs from participants were tested for HPV DNA and prevalences of any HPV and HR-HPV were estimated. Researchers found:

  • Overall, males had higher prevalences than females of any HPV (prevalence ratio [PR], 1.14).
  • Prevalences were lower among males than females at ages 14-19 but higher at ages 40-49 and 50-59.
  • Most sex differences were attenuated after adjusting for lifetime sex partners, but males had lower prevalences at ages 14-19 and 20-24 and higher HR-HPV prevalence among non-Hispanic blacks.
