Through an ego network of healthcare facilities, an outbreak hospital’s ego network accurately predicted which hospitals outbreak case patients would visit during a regional spread of an outbreak of carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE). The outbreak of New Delhi metallo (NDM)-β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli, a type of CRE uncommon in the US, was identified in a tertiary care hospital (Hospital A) in northeastern Illinois and an ego network was constructed. Facilities that NDM outbreak patients subsequently visited were identified as well as whether the facilities reported NDM cases. Among the findings:
- Of the 31 outbreak case-patients entered into the XDRO registry who visited Hospital A, 19 (61%) were subsequently admitted to 13 other hospitals during the following 12 months.
- Of the 13 hospitals, 9 (69%) were in the defined ego network, and 5 of the 9 consequently reported ≥1 additional NDM case.
- Ego network facilities were more likely to identify patients compared to a geographically-defined group of facilities.
