Broad opioid legislation advances in Congress

Key clinical point: Leaders in the House and the Senate have agreed to a final legislative package to address the opioid crisis.

Major finding: Several provisions in the legislation would affect medical professionals directly. At press time, votes on the combined bill had not been scheduled.

Study details: Provisions include allowing Medicare to pay clinicians to provide substance-use disorder treatment via telemedicine and adding opioid abuse screening to the Welcome to Medicare exam and annual physical.
