Cancer Patients Increasingly Being Discharged to Subacute Rehabilitation Facilities

Key clinical point: Cancer patients are being referred to subacute rehabilitation (SAR) facilities at an increasing rate, despite few surviving long enough to be treated with emerging immunotherapies.

Major finding: Of the 358 patients discharged to SAR facilities, 174 (49%) returned to the oncology clinic before readmission or death and 117 (33%) received additional cancer-directed treatment.

Study details: An electronic chart review of 358 patients who were discharged to SAR facilities from 2009 to 2017.

Disclosures: Dr. Smith reported being employed by UpToDate and receiving royalties as coeditor of the Oxford Textbook of Cancer Communication. No other conflicts of interest were reported.
