Study Supports Safety of 2-cm Margins for Thick Melanomas

Key clinical point: Melanomas greater than 2 mm can be excised safely with a 2-cm margin.

Major finding: The mortality rate over a median of 20 years of follow-up was similar for patients with 2-cm and 4-cm excision margins (49%, and 51%, respectively).

Study details: An open-label, multicenter, randomized trial of 936 adult melanoma patients in Sweden, followed for a median of 20 years.
