AFib patients do best on a DOAC started 7-10 days post stroke

Key clinical point: A direct-acting oral anticoagulant begun 7-10 days after a stroke produced the best outcome, but just missed statistical significance.

Major finding: Patients starting a DOAC 7-10 days after an index stroke experienced half the number of events of other patients.

Study details: Review of 1,289 patients with atrial fibrillation managed and followed after a cardioembolic stroke at any of eight U.S. stroke centers.
