Sickle cell patients with vitamin D deficiency prone to more ED visits, longer stays

Key clinical point: Patients with SCD plus vitamin D deficiency were more likely to have more emergency department visits and longer length of admission.

Major finding: Patients with both SCD and vitamin D deficiency were more likely to have at least one ED visit (P < .01).

Study details: A single-center retrospective chart review of all pediatric patients with SCD (1-21 years old) with at least one reported vitamin D level who maintained follow up (n = 90).
