Gastrointestinal symptoms affected one in four patients hospitalized with COVID-19

Key clinical point: Female patients with COVID-19 may be particularly likely to develop gastrointestinal symptoms, which may be associated with increased systemic inflammation and poorer liver function.

Major finding: Among nonmedical staff (median age, 50 years), the proportion of GI symptoms in female patients was significantly higher than that in male patients (63% vs. 37%; P = .03).

Study details: Study of 254 hospital employees with presumptive COVID-19 pneumonia in Wuhan, China.
