Monitor HIV-1 Vertically Infected Patients on Antiretrovirals for Reduced BMD

Key clinical point: HIV-1 vertically infected patients should be closely monitored for early identification and treatment of reduced bone mineral density and impaired bone homeostasis.

Major finding: Bone turnover markers P1NP and CTX increased in a respective 43% and 61% of patients; with P1NP alteration related to age, race, BMI, physical activity, therapy duration, and CTX alteration correlated only with age.

Study details: Single-center, cross-sectional study, from January 2015 through July 2015 of 67 vertically infected patients (mean age, 19.2 years; range, 6–31).

Disclosures: The authors reported no conflicts of interest.
