There are significant deficiencies in utilization of osteoporosis screening among women between 65 and 79 years of age, according to a retrospective analysis involving more than 1.6 million women. Meanwhile, positive changes were seen in women 50 to 64 years of age, as well as those 80+, in line with national guidelines.
Participants were aged ≥50 years with no prior history of osteoporosis diagnosis, osteoporosis drug use, or hip fracture. Investigators looked at osteoporosis screening during the most recent 2-year period. Among the results:
- Overall screening rate was 21% in the younger age group; it was 27% in those 65 to 79 years of age and 13% in the oldest group.
- Utilization in the younger group declined 31% between 2008 and 2014; it was unchanged in the middle group, and increased 38% in the older group.
- After adjusting for certain variables, black women were least likely and Asian and Hispanic women were most likely to be screened.
