Predicting Loss of Control Eating in Teen Girls

Obesity; ePub 2017 Dec 27; Goldschmidt, et al

Over time, negative emotionality in teenage girls may promote loss of control eating independent of the effects of prior social functioning, researchers concluded after conducting a study involving 834 individuals. Adolescent girls were assessed annually for 4 years using either cognitive-behavioral (n=416) or interpersonal (n=418) models. Among the results:

  • Body dissatisfaction at 14 years prospectively predicted loss of control eating at 18 years, both directly and indirectly via dieting.
  • Interpersonal functioning at 14 years was negatively linked with negative emotionality at 17 years.
  • This, in turn, had an indirect effect on loss of control eating at 18 years (but not a direct effect).

The authors noted that loss of control eating preventive and early intervention efforts might work better if these theoretical frameworks are included.
